Vito M. Castelgrande Jr., 91, a resident of the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center, formerly of West Scranton, died Saturday afternoon at Moses Taylor Hospital. He was the husband of the late Martha Arvay Castelgrande, who died Oct. 29, 2005.

Born Dec. 20, 1920, in West Scranton, son of the late Vito and Margherita Coviello Castelgrande, he was a 1938 graduate of Scranton Technical High School. He was a partner in the Empire Barber Supply Co. with his father, Vito, and brother, Joseph. He was a talented baseball player, playing in the minor leagues with the Pittsburgh minor league system before World War II. During the war, he served with the Army Air Corps in Alaska.

He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle who enjoyed baseball and golf.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at the Gino J. Merli Center for the kindness and care.

Surviving are two sons, Vito M.J. Castelgrande III and wife, Ann Marie, Scranton; and Frank and wife, Jan, Lebanon, Pa.; two sisters, Irene Bevilacqua and Mary Pizzo; five grandchildren, Vito T., Ivy, Marcy and Roger? Castelgrande; and Andrea Calhoun and husband, Thomas; a great-granddaughter, Tori Calhoun; several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, infant Frank and Joseph; four sisters, Nellie Verrone, Ann Bellino, Margaret Ciullo and Catherine Agnone.

The funeral will be Tuesday from the Patrick F. Guido Funeral Home, 120 S. Main Ave., Scranton, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Lucy's Church, 949 Scranton St., Scranton. Interment will follow at Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.

Friends may call Monday 5 to 8 p.m.
