Edwin Otto Carmel
NORTH WOODBURY: Edwin Otto Carmel, age 84, of North Woodbury, died Friday evening April 29, 2011, at his residence.
On February 24, 1927, Edwin was born in Galion, Ohio, the son of the late Otto William and Branche (Graf) Carmel. He graduated from Galion High School, and later attended two years of college at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas.
A veteran of World War II, Edwin served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a merchant marine.
An avid sportsman, Edwin played semi-pro baseball in the Longhorn League from 1949 to 1950.
A railroad conductor, Edwin had his career with the New York Central, Con Rail, and Penn Central railroads until his retirement.
In later years, Edwin was a member of the Waterford United Methodist Church.
For Edwin, it can be said simply that "he loved life, golf and good food!"
He will be missed by his wife, Anna (Levering) Hartson Carmel of North Woodbury; two step-children: Pat (Vicki) Hartson of Hartville, Ohio, and Keenan (Joyce) Hartson of Dahlonega, Georgia; a step-daughter-in-law, Millissa Hartson of Mansfield; ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; and by a sister-in-law, Kay Rinehart.
He was also preceded in death by a step-son, Michael Hartson.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma E. Persinger, and is survived by her children: Joanne Sowers and Raymond Beach.
He was also preceded in death by his sister, Kay Parker, and is survived by her children: Steve Parker and Jack Parker. He is also survived by his sister, Joanne Weaver, and her children: Sandy Weaver and Sally Weaver; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Per Edwin's wishes, services will be held privately for his family at a later date.
