Robert E. Carlson

E. Carlson, 70, of Newington, formerly of Hartford, died suddenly on Saturday,
(August 22, 2009) while at his weekend home in Townshend, VT. He leaves
behind his beloved wife of 49 years, Joanne (Sullivan) Carlson.
He grew up in Hartford's Dutch Point neighborhood; one of eight children
born to the late Carl R. and Dorothy (Jergensen) Carlson.
He was educated in Hartford Schools and was a star athlete at Bulkeley
High School Class of '57.
He was employed for a brief period by the MDC and was a member of the
Army Reserves at Fort Dix, New Jersey.
Bob was signed by the San Francisco Giants where he played baseball in
their minor league farm system.
He returned home and was employed as a pipe fitter for CNG for 35 years
retiring in 1996. His passion was baseball where he played in the Greater
Hartford Twilight League for nearly three decades.
He was inducted into the Greater Hartford Twilight Hall of Fame in 1991.
During those years he led the league in many offensive categories while
playing for Moriarty Brothers.
He was an avid Yankees, Whalers and NY Giants fan. He was a proud member
of the KMA Horseshoe Club in Townsend, VT and the CNG Retiree Association.
A devoted husband, caretaker, father, grandfather, and friend to all who
knew him, he leaves his son, Robert E. Carlson, Jr. and his wife, Lori
of Kensington; daughters, Patti (Carlson) Kobylarz and her husband, Jeff
of Newington and Melissa Carlson and her fiancée, Matt Kaliner
of Somerville, MA; three grandchildren, Sarah Carlson and Katie and Andrew
He also leaves behind his siblings, sisters, Carol Kimshel, Dotty Krauss,
and Susan Carlson all of Hartford, Pam Bruyette of Florida, Karlene Eaton
and her husband, Kurt of Windsor; brothers, Thomas Carlson of Hartford
and Carl R. Carlson and his partner, David of Vernon.
Bob also leaves many nieces and nephews, friends, Don and Doris Brown
of Rocky Hill, retired friends from CNG, Tom and Elaine Libby of Florida,
The Camperama Family and his beloved cat, Mischief.
His funeral service will be held Thursday, 10:15 a.m. from Newington Memorial
Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington, followed by a Mass of Christian
Burial, 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Newington.
Interment will follow in West Meadow Cemetery. Relatives and friends are
invited to call Wednesday from 5 - 8 p.m. at Newington Memorial.
