RICHMOND, Maine -- Merrill F. Carkin, 76, died Aug. 27, 2009, at home.

He was born in North Woodstock, N.H., July 8, 1933, to Robert and Beulah Carkin.

He graduated from North Woodstock High School in 1951 and Atlantic Union College in 1959.

After high school, he was a semi-pro baseball player in the southern farm leagues and was inducted into the Lincoln-North Woodstock Sports Hall of Fame this year.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War as an unarmed medic.

He married Gail Stuber on June 8, 1958.

He was a junior high biology teacher for one year before joining the Maine Department of Human Services in 1964. For 37 years he worked as a social worker. He had several part-time jobs after retirement, including Uplift in Gardiner.

He loved animals, especially his cats, Calico, Scout and Ellie.

In addition to his wife of 51 years, family includes children, Peter of Fitchburg, Mass.; Joline Carkin-Mejia of Clinton, Mass.; Jennifer Hall of Casco, Maine, and Patrick of Milford, N.H.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Warren of Auburn; sisters, Bernice Vaughn of Sanbornville, N.H., Anna Ford of Nashville, Ga., and fraternal twin, Muriel Cox of Days Creek, Ore.; nieces and nephews.

SERVICES: Calling hours are Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home, 165 Quaker Ridge Road, Casco.

The funeral is Monday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home.
