Former Maryville High School Athletic Director
Jim Campbell died on Sunday.

James Coleman Campbell, 77, was the high
school's athletic director for 15 years and retired in 1996. Since then, he remained active in the local sports scene by doing radio broadcasts of high school and Maryville College football and basketball games. He also helped organize the Blount County Sports Hall of Fame.

Campbell graduated from Maryville College in 1953, where he played football, basketball and baseball under coach Lombe Honaker. He was a Little All-American football player as a punt returner during his senior year.

After college, he was signed to a professional baseball contract with the Cincinnati Reds, but the career was cut short when he was drafted into the Army.

In 1956, Campbell was hired to coach at Maryville Junior High School, which began his long career with Maryville city schools.

In 1962, he left to become the Director of Christian Education at New Providence Presbyterian Church, but he returned to teaching and coaching in 1972.

He became Maryville High School's basketball and baseball coach, where he was a mentor to countless students for years.

When he retired in May 1996 from Maryville High School, the community honored Campbell by naming the high school gymnasium the James Campbell Gymnasium.
