Gene "Pete" Calder

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. -
Mr. Gene "Pete" Calder,78, died Friday, November 9, 2012 in
Birmingham, Ala. after an illness. Mr. Calder was born July 17, 1934 in
Marion County, a son of the late Matthew A. and Wonnie Huggins Calder.
He was a 1953 graduate of Mullins High School.
After graduating high school, Mr. Calder signed a major league baseball
contract with the New York Giants. His baseball career was interrupted
for 2 years, during which time he served in the US Army and after his
discharge from service, he rejoined the New York Giants and remained with
them until he ended his baseball career in 1961, at which time he moved
Surviving Mr. Calder are: his Wife, Margaret Calder of Birmingham, Ala.;
his Stepson: Mark; 2 Grandchildren; 4 Great Grandchildren; a Sister: Jacquelyn
C. Stewart of Atlanta, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service for the family was held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday,
November 14, at Fork Baptist Church Cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins
Funeral Home of Mullins.
