CARBONDALE -- Max Austin Burgett, 83, formerly of Carbondale, passed away Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, in Arnold, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Maude Burgett; and his wife, JoAnn Burgett.

Max was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in World War II and was recalled for the Korean War. He graduated in 1954 from University of Missouri Science and Technology in Rolla, Mo. He was a civil engineer with Illinois Department of Transportation in Carbondale. On Oct. 6, 1992, he received a heart transplant at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Max was a devoted fan of Saluki sports and loved to play golf with his friends.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Judy O'Connor and her husband, Jerry, of Arnold, Mo.; three nieces; and one nephew; and 12 great-nieces and nephews.

A private memorial will be conducted.
