GILBERTVILLE - Bernard "B.P." Breitbach, 88, of Rosewood Estates, formerly of Gilbertville, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo.
He was born Oct. 30, 1921, in Peosta, son of Jacob and Anna Hosch Breitbach. He graduated from high school in 1939, attended Loras College for two years, then joined the Coast Guard, serving as a radioman on ships. He then returned to college and graduated in 1949. He was a pitcher for a minor league baseball team. He then went on to work at Gilbertville Savings Bank and the National Bank of Waterloo, retiring in 1986.
Survived by: seven nephews and a niece, Fredrick Breitbach and James (Marcie) Breitbach, both of Gilbertville, Loras (Karen) Breitbach, Galen "Pete" Breitbach and John (Trudy) Breitbach, all of Jesup, Paula A. Breitbach of Waterloo, John (Ann) Franta of Elkader and Steve (Carolee) Franta of Clear Lake; and a sister-in-law, Bernice Breitbach of Gilbertville.
Preceded in death by: his parents; three brothers, Aloysius "A.W.," Joseph and the Rev. John A. Breitbach; and two sisters, Mary (John J.) Franta and Catherine Breitbach.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, Waterloo, where there will be a 4:30 p.m. rosary. Full military rites will be conducted by Nugent-Demuth Post 714 of Gilbertville. Visitation also an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Bernard has always loved all animals and was often seen feeding squirrels and raccoons, even stray cats.
