Edward William Brakus Sr., 73, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the loving husband of Nola Ruth Brakus.

Edward was born Aug. 9, 1935, in Donora, Pa., the son of the late Bozhe Brakus and Barbara Kolinski Brakus. Edward proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He was an avid golfer, loved woodworking and played minor league baseball in the Phillies baseball organization. He received his bachelor's degree from East Tennessee State and a master's degree in education from the University of Maryland. He then worked as a teacher/administrator in the Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland. Edward was a member of the Forest Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Edward Brakus Jr. of Austin, Texas; a daughter, Julie Panzeri and her husband, Michael, of Bel Air, Md.; three grandchildren, Christopher, Madeline and Charlotte Panzeri; and five sisters, Alice, Agnes, Barbara, Josephine and Mary.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, at Forest Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Roger Uittenbogaard officiating. A reception will follow the service. Interment will take place in Erwin, Tenn., on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009.
