"Bob" Brackens, 83, passed away on May 17, 2012, at his home
in Princeton, W.Va. Happily, he died peacefully after suffering from congestive
heart failure and dementia. His stepdaughter-in-law and caregiver, Melissa
Elkins, and her daughter, Katie, were by his side.
Bob was born on September 29, 1928 in Covington, Va., the son of Mary
and Sam Brackens. He was one of eight children. He attended Covington
High School where he excelled in baseball and football. After graduation,
he signed to play baseball with the Chicago Cubs. He played one season
for the Elizabethton, Tenn. Cubs farm team.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Helen Trimble
Brackens; and all but one of his siblings, Jim Brackens, of Charlottesville.
Additionally he is survived by his former wife, Sue Farmer; his two daughters,
Lynn Ellen and Carolyn Leigh; numerous nieces and nephews including Melissa
Elkins, Katie Riddle, Jessica Daniel, and Gregg Nelson; and seven grandchildren
and great- grandchildren.
A private service will be held in Roanoke on June 24, 2012. Cards and
