Donald L. Borger, 77, of Red Bud, Ill., born March 4, 1930, in Freeburg, Ill., died Monday, Feb. 4, 2008, at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, Ill.

Mr. Borger was a retired reclamation foreman for Peabody Coal Company, where he worked for more than 35 years. He was a 22-year member of the United Mine Workers of America. Donald played minor league baseball for both the New York Giants and the Boston Red Sox. He also played for the Belleville Edwards and the Freeburg Entries in the Mon-Clair Baseball League.

He was a longtime member of the Freeburg Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of the Freeburg Sportsman's Club; American Legion Freeburg Post 550; and VFW Freeburg Post 7074. Mr. Borger was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sabra Janet, nee Wild, Borger whom he married Nov. 18, 1950, and who died Nov. 7, 2001; his parents, Clemens L. and Marguerite, nee Brueggemann, Borger; and a brother, Richard Borger, in infancy.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter, Philip L. (Lauren) Borger of Freeburg, Ill., Paul L. (Deborah) Borger of Red Bud, Ill., and Sabra Suzanne Blumhorst of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas; eight grandchildren, Brent (Jody) Borger, Brock (Samantha) Borger, Stephenie Borger, Joshua (Kirsten) Borger, Amanda (Lee) Braun, Sabra E. Blumhorst (Josh Curl), Andrea L. (Gerald) Ramos, and Brooke L. Blumhorst; six great-grandchildren, Hunter Borger, Haleigh Borger, Jenna Borger, Tanis Borger, Madison Braun, and Chase Ramos; a brother, Robert C. (Marilyn) Borger of Freeburg, Ill.; a sister, Doris M. (Lavern) Smith of Freeburg, Ill.; and a brother-in-law, Dale E. (Audrey) Wild Sr. of Leasburg, Mo.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Freeburg, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Freeburg, Ill., with the Rev. Douglas Stewart officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Freeburg, Ill.
