SALISBURY - Sidney Alfred Blume, 79, passed away Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, at his residence.

Born May 3, 1930, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Charlie Blume and Amy Benson Blume.

Mr. Blume was educated in Rowan County Schools. He retired from Duke Power as a supervisor in coal handling at the Marshal Steam Plant. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

Sid played professional baseball for the minor league Salisbury Pirates, farm team for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1950-51. He was forced to retire following an injury to his pitching arm. He later coached the Spencer Jaycees Little League for many years, and then coached the Spencer Babe Ruth League. Sid was also an avid hunter, always looking or the larger buck every season. He enjoyed golf in earlier years and surf fishing. Most of all he was the number one Yankees fan.

Sid was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed nothing more than being surrounded by his family and friends. Whether it was a special occasion or one of Betty's wonderful family dinners, he loved watching and playing with his younger grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Scotty Blume; and brother, Bill Blume.
