Donald W. Betz Sr.
September 4, 2010 Donald William "Waldo" Betz Sr. died Saturday
at St. Joseph's Hospital. Born May 27, 1929, the oldest son of German
immigrants Willi and Lisa Betz, Don was a graduate of Sherburne High School
and an active participant in five sports.
He was a WWII veteran and a proud member of the American Legion and VFW.
After service, he played professional baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates
organization. He was an engineer with Sperry Rand Corp. and retired as
supervisor of the manufacturing facility in Bristol, TN, in 1979. He was
an avid hunter, fisherman and trapper.
Don met his life's love, Shirley L. Mack, in high school, and they have
been married 60 years. Survivors besides his wife are his sons, Larry
Betz and Donald Betz, both of NY; daughter, Doreen Ann Wollmer of Baton
Rouge, LA; brother, Robert Betz of NY; grandsons, Michael Adams of NY,
David and Danny Betz of Baton Rouge, LA, and Kris Wollmer of Baton Rouge,
LA; great-grandchildren, Kale, Cody and Kiana of Adams, NY, Kelsey and
Mistie Wollmer of Baton Rouge, LA, and Rebecca Betz of Baton Rouge, LA.
Services are private.
