Carroll was born Aug. 14, 1928, in Bellwood, Neb., to Anne and Peter Beringer.
He was a graduate of Marietta High School. In 1946, he left the family
farm and signed a contract to play professional baseball for the Dodgers
organization. He was drafted into the Army in 1951 and served two years
in Stuttgart, Germany. Carroll's 33-year baseball career with the Fort
Worth Cats, Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies ended with his
retirement in 1978.
Carroll married the love of his life, Jimmie Nix, in 1954. They celebrated
their 56th year of marriage in February. They raised three beloved daughters.
Carroll was an active member of the Fort Worth Basketball Officials Association
for over 15 years.
Following retirement, he continued his interest in baseball by assisting
in Texas Wesleyan University's fundraising effort. He successfully recruited
baseball players and other sports celebrities to perform at annual banquets
in an effort to raise funds. His love of the Fort Worth Cats continued
in later years as he was involved in the rebuilding of LaGrave Field at
its original site. Carroll and his wife, Jimmie, have been members of
St. Rita's Catholic Church for 40 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Anne Beringer.
