Horace Pope "Red"
Benton, Jr., 91, of Wilson passed away Tuesday. A graveside service will
be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday in Maplewood Cemetery. The Rev. Gary
Walling will officiate.
The family will receive friends 6:00–8:00 p.m. Friday at Joyner's
Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.
"Red" graduated from UNC in 1942 where he was a letterman in
football and baseball. He was a WWII veteran, attaining the rank of Lieutenant
in the U.S. Navy. Following the war, "Red" taught and coached
at Charles L. Coon High School and taught accounting at Atlantic Christian
He played in the Coastal Plain league with the Wilson Tobs. "Red"
started Benton Office Interiors in 1951 and stayed active in the business
till his passing. He was first elected to the Wilson City Council in 1957
and later served as Mayor of Wilson during the 1970's.
"Red" was a longtime member of First Christian Church where
he served as a deacon. He was a firm believer in the family. "Red"
was a loving husband, father and grandfather, who was dearly loved and
will be greatly missed.
"Red" is survived by his daughter, Lynda Benton Blakistone and
husband, Jon of Wimberly, TX; his son, Branch Harrell Benton and wife,
Kim of Wilson; and his grandchildren, Fran Marie Benton, Allison Keith
Benton, Griffin Harrell Benton, Tricia Lynn Blakistone and Joe Scott Blakistone
and wife, Blythe.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Harrell Benton and his
parents, Horace Pope Benton, Sr. and Marie Branch Benton.
