Robert W. Bastian, age 78, of Dalton, Ga., and formerly of Falconer, N.Y., passed away Sunday, March 13, 2011, at Hamilton Medical Center.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Nina Bastian; son, Chris Bastian, who passed away January 30 of this year; brother, Gordon Bastian; and other siblings: Margaret, Lloyd, Harold, Lawrence, Lyle, Ernest, Earl and Clyde.

Mr. Bastian was a professional baseball player. After playing for Enterprise, Ala., in the Class D Florida-Alabama League in the spring of 1951, he was sent to Olean, a New York Yankees farm club where he batted around .300. He played third base there again in 1952 and hit .320.

After the 1952 season, Robert was drafted into the Army, where he served from 1952 until 1954, and when he returned to civilian life he didn't return to baseball.

He is survived by his companion, Stephanie Anderson, with whom he made his home in Dalton; a son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Paula Bastian of Omaha Neb.; sisters: Lois "Tillie" Taylor and Joan Smith, both of Jamestown, N.Y.; grandchildren: Samantha, Ann Marie, Joey, David and Nina, all of Omaha, Neb.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the Pleasant Grove Chapel of Julian Peeples Funeral Home.
