Alphonse A. "Alfie" Bakunas of Linden, N.J., passed away on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013 in the Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains, N.J.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Werson Funeral Home, 635 No. Wood Ave., Linden.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the funeral from the Werson Funeral Home, 635 No. Wood Ave., Linden, on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013 at 10:15 a.m. The Office of Christian Burial will be in St. George Byzantine Catholic Church, Linden, at 11 a.m. Panachida Service will be on Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. Cremation will be private.

Born in Linden, Alfie resided there his entire life. He was employed by American Products, Union, N.J., as a machinist for 17 years before retiring. Prior to that, Alfie was employed by Singer Manufacturing in Elizabeth as a machinist.

Alfie was an avid golfer, and loved crabbing in Point Pleasant, N.J. He was a member of the "M.O.D." (Men of Distinction), the Knights of Columbus Council 2859, Linden, and the Greek Catholic Union.

Alfie proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He played professional baseball for the St. Louis Browns minor league team.

Alfie was predeceased by his siblings, Joseph, John and Mary Bakunas, and Tessie Babbit.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 60 years, Veronica (Pancurak) Bakunas; loving children, Carol A. Paglione and her husband, John, and Allan J. Bakunas and his wife, Mary Ann; dear sister, Blanche Porbansky.

He is also survived by two cherished granddaughters, Alana O'Hearn and her husband, Kevin, and Natalie Bakunas. Kindly omit flowers.
