Maurice Pierre "Maury" Ayala

Maurice Pierre "Maury" Ayalac succumbed to pneumonia on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at the age of 93.

Maury was born in Chino, California on August 4, 1918 and attended Chino High School where he was a high school All American in both basketball and baseball. He also attended Riverside Junior College and Humboldt State College. He was an outstanding athlete at all three institutions, excelling in all sports.

Maury moved to Humboldt County to attend Humboldt State College in 1940. He played professional baseball for several years in the U.S. and Mexico. He later played with the Humboldt Crabs for several years. He was a basketball referee and baseball umpire for local high schools, colleges and for the Humboldt Crabs for approximately 37 years.

In 1943 Maury married his college sweetheart, Kathryn "Kay" Nelson in Oakland. They remained married for 68½years. Maury worked in sales for many years, culminating as sales manager with both Humboldt Bay Cable and Cox Cable. He retired from Cox Cable in his 70's. He enjoyed fishing in his earlier years and golf in his later years. He was a member of the Baywood Golf and Country Club for many years. He also enjoyed watching his sons and grandchildren participate in local sports programs.

He is survived by his wife Kathryn "Kay"; sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Cherrie, Mickey and Michele, Rick and Kelly; grandchildren Michele, Brian, Amanda, Vincent, Matthew and Dane; great-grandchildren Sophia, Norah and Owen and by his sister Rosina.

He was preceded in death by his brother Ruben; sisters Susan and Stella.

Memorial service will be held at Sanders Funeral Home, 1835 E Street in Eureka on Friday, January 27, 2012 at 10 a.m. with Fr. Michael Cloney officiating.
