Newport News - Russell
John Aungst, 90, passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at Mary Immaculate
Hospital. Born in Pine Grove, PA, he had been a Peninsula resident for
the past 54 years.
He was assigned as a navigator on a B-24 Bomber during part of his military
service in the Army Air Corp. He later retired from the U.S. Army as a
Lt. Col. in 1967 after 24 years of faithful service to his country which
spanned service during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
Following his military career, Russell went onto work with Civil Service
and retired as procurement officer from AVLABS at Ft. Eustis.
Earlier in his life, he played professional baseball at the Minor League
level in Syracuse, NY. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from Gettysburg
College. He was a member of Reformation Lutheran Church.
Mr. Aungst was preceded in death by a son, Neil Douglas Aungst; a brother,
Danny Aungst; and a sister, Myrtle Rupp.
He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Gladys Reinert Aungst of
Newport News; his children, Marilyn Georg and husband, Bob, of Frederick,
MD, Karen Gardiner and husband, Paul, of Hoschton, GA, Jeff Aungst and
wife, Debra, of Columbus, OH and Cynthia Aungst of Chantilly, VA; a sister,
Verna Hartman and husband, Jim, of Sinking Spring, PA; five grandchildren,
Kelsey, Damon, Tim, Rachel and Neal; four great-grandchildren, Haley,
Andrew, Pierce and Graham; and other extended family.
The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m., Sunday, February 24 at
Weymouth Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m., Monday, February 25, 2013
at Reformation Lutheran Church by Pastor David P. Gunderlach.
Interment with Full Military Honors will follow in Peninsula Memorial
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Reformation Lutheran
Church, 13100 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23602.
