Downers Grove North High School teacher and baseball coach Mike Amrhein died Thursday, according to an email sent by Principal Scott Kasik.

Amrhein worked in the Special Services department at North for six years and was an assistant varsity baseball coach, according to a DGN Boosters Club website.

"(He) was loved by all who knew him," Kasik said in his email. "… Please keep Mr. Amrhein’s family in your thoughts and prayers."

Kasik also said counselors will be available at the school next week to support grieving students.

A graduate of Oak Park and River Forest High School, Amrhein attended the University of Notre Dame on a college scholarship. After graduating there in 1997, he was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the tenth round and played six years in their minor league organization, eventually working his way up to AAA, according to Amrhein's profile on the Booster Club site.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced by Amrhein's family.
