Former Cardinals, Reds pitcher dies April 27, 2000 11:16
PM SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) - Brooks Lawrence, who pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds and worked in the Reds' front office, died Thursday at Mercy Hospital. He was 75. Lawrence had been fighting cancer. Family members and the hospital declined to identify a cause of death. Lawrence was 69-62 with a 4.25 ERA in two seasons with the Cardinals (1954-55) and five with the Reds (1956-60). His best season was his first with Cincinnati, when he won 13 consecutive games and made the National League All-Star team. He finished the year 19-10 with a 3.99 ERA. After retiring as a player, Lawrence worked 10 years at International Harvester in Springfield and then spent 10 years handling scouting, minor league player development, radio and television work and season-ticket sales for the Reds. Funeral arrangements were pending at the Robert C. Henry funeral home. |
