HENRY L. "HANK" BOROWY, 88, of BRICK, formerly of Bloomfield, died Monday, Aug. 23, at his son's home in Brick. Born, raised and residing most of his life in Bloomfield, he moved to Point Pleasant 12 years ago and to Brick two years ago. He was a graduate of Bloomfield High School in 1935, Montclair Academy in 1936, and attended Fordham University for three years. He pitched for the Fordham baseball team and compiled a record of 33 wins and one loss. He signed with the N.Y. Yankees in 1942 and pitched in both the 1942 and 1943 World Series. In 1945 the Yankees sold Borowy to the Chicago Cubs; during the season, he had had 10 wins with the Yankees and a record of 11-2 with the Cubs giving him a combined win total of 21 victories in both leagues, the first to attain that feat. The Cubs went on to face the Yankees that year (1945) and Hank recorded two wins for Chicago in a losing effort.

He also recorded one win for the Yankees in 1943, and started an Allstar game for the American League in 1944. His combined pitching record in both leagues for a career was 108-82. During World War II, he was sent to Alaskan Army and Navy bases in Kodiak, Anchorage and the Aleutian Islands as a member of a Sports Cavalade to entertain the troops. After retiring from baseball, he owned the Hank Borowy Realty Co., Bloomfield, for many years, retiring 15 years ago.

He was predeceased by his wife, Katherine Connolly Borowy; and a brother, Frank Borowy. Surviving are two daughters, Claire Gelli and Mary Ellen Borowy; a son, Henry A. Borowy; a sister, Helen Muraski; two brothers, Edward Borowy and William Borowy; and four grandsons.

Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Frank Halpin's Brookdale Funeral Home, 1284 Broad St., Bloomfield. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Valentine's Church, Bloomfield. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Bloomfield.
